Black History Month Here
are some historical fact about Black History. Be sure
to visit the library and check out the Black History month
and Civil Rights Display.
- The original observance for Black history began as
Negro
History Week in 1926 through a major effort by Dr.
Carter G. Woodson. It was in 1976 when the United
States devoted an entire month to commemorating Black
History. Black History Month is also called African
American History month, but it is acceptable to use
either one.
- On February 1, 1865, the 38th Congress adopted the
13th Amendment to the United States Constitution which
abolished slavery.

December 1, 1955, Rosa Parks is arrested for refusing to
give up her seat on the bus.
- August 23, 1965, Martin Luther King delivers his "I
have a Dream" speech. More than 250,000 civil rights
demonstrators were in attendance.
