Asian Pacific American Heritage Month
Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, like many other
history months, began as a week-long celebration. In
1977, the bills began in the House and later moved into the
Senate. In 1978, President Jimmy Carter signed the
Joint Resolution making it an annual celebration. In
1992, George H. W. Bush designated the holiday to be
celebrated the entire month of May. This coordinated
with the first Japanese immigration into the U.S. in May
1843 and the celebration of the completion of the
Transcontinental Railroad (May 10, 1869), which was built
primarily by Chinese immigrants. For more information
