Elm Creek Quilt Novels by Jennifer Chiaverini

You don’t have to love quilting to enjoy these novels.  Since I am a quilter, I enjoy reading these books because there is a fair amount about quilting in the novels.  A non-quilter would not feel left out; however, and might even be inspired to take up quilting.  Jennifer Chiaverini is a master story teller.  I have enjoyed seven books in the series and there will be another one published in November this year.

Chiaverini has a real knack for developing characters.  The main characters of all seven books are Sylvia Compson and Sara McClure.  Matriarch, Sylvia Compson teaches Sara to quilt.   The many trips to the local quilt shop for fabric and supplies, introduces more characters, all women, with various trials and successes in their lives.   Her novels are filled with historical events which include life as a young wife living through the hardships and agonies of World War II, families being torn apart by jealousy, betrayal, loss and tragedy, the Underground Railroad, the Civil War and the American struggle over slavery.

The following is a list of these novels in the order they were written:

  •     The Quilters’s Apprentice

  •     Round Robin

  •     The Cross-Country Quilters

  •     The Runaway Quilt

  •     The Quilter’s Legacy

  •     The Master Quilter

  •     The Sugar Camp Quilt

  •     The Christmas Quilt (November 2005)
