| . The Mermaid Chair by Sue Monk Kidd. Viking (352p) ISBN 0670033944 ACTC Call Number: PS 3611.I44 M47 2005 The Mermaid Chair is another great book written by Sue Monk Kidd. Kidd made a name for herself with The Secret Life of Bees. If you have already read The Secret Life of Bees and enjoyed it, you will find Mermaid Chair just as enjoyable. The books are not related by anything other than the author so no need to worry about picking up one before the other. Kidd begins readers on a journey through one woman’s life. Jessie finds herself alone in a sea of people. As she sends her daughter off to college, her own mother needs her now more than ever. A sudden realization of how “comfortable” her relationship with her husband proves to be the biggest problem in Jessie’s life, but that all changes when she is summoned to the island where her mother lives. Jessie is alarmed to find her mother is going through a difficult time, to say the least. However, Jessie’s time on the island proves to be a chance she needed to “find” herself again. This is all accomplished by a tie to the island’s famous mermaid chair. The story is obviously fictional and even the island itself does not exist. However, there is a great deal of folklore surrounding the mermaid chair and even the saint for where the story may have come from. It is certainly an interesting tale. I really enjoyed both The Secret Life of Bees and The Mermaid Chair. The library does have copies of both – Enjoy!! Sara Brown Public Services/Government Documents Librarian ACTC Library |
